About Friendlai

There's a huge amount of computing power sitting idle around the world: gaming PCs between sessions, Macs with powerful chips that mostly run a browser, workstations left on overnight. Friendlai puts that spare capacity to work running open AI models, and pays the people who share it.

Spare capacity, put to use

Instead of building another data center, Friendlai is a network of ordinary computers. Anyone with a capable machine can run a node: a small program that picks up questions from the network, answers them with an open model on that computer, and earns rewards for every answer. When the computer is busy with something else, the node can pause, and the rest of the network carries on.

Think of it like SETI@home or Folding@home, but for AI, and the people contributing get paid.

AI built with a community

Friendlai only runs open models, the ones anyone can download, inspect and run themselves. The network's capacity comes from the people taking part, and every node's work is visible on the network status page. Because there's no data center to pay for, using it costs very little: you get free credits every day, and more are cheap.

What to expect

• The models are open models that fit on a home computer, not the biggest frontier models, and replies can take a little longer than you're used to.
• Your questions are answered by computers run by community members, so don't send anything you wouldn't want someone else to see. The privacy policy has the details.
• Developers can use the same network through an OpenAI-compatible API.
